Why we need to care about the welfare of animals

I have noticed over and over again that people who really love and care about animals also love and care about the people around them. I know instinctively that people, animals, and the environment are connected.

So let's see..if everyone loved and cared for a pet, would we have a need for war, prisons, womens shelters, and child protective services?
